Doctor-patient relationships are built on the delicate foundations of trust and confidence. To maintain the sanctity of this relationship doctors should abide by certain medical ethics stipulated by their profession in their country. In our increasingly consumerist medical industry, healthcare is no more a benevolent act of doctors but a commodity in the market economy. Each country has laws in safeguarding the interests of patients as consumers of medical services. Doctors should be mindful of the guidelines. In this short course, these laws and guidelines from India (largely derivatives of British Law and thus mostly similar in all Commonwealth countries) are described and discussed.
